Prospective candidates

​Congratulations on considering a run for public office in Crittenden County. From school board to city council to countywide offices, all will be on the local ballot in 2022. Find a chart at left for the local races on the ballot, the filing period, the cost to file and the number of signatures needed on your nominating petition.

Before you move ahead, know that to seek office, you must first file a Statement of Spending Intent and Appointment of Campaign Treasurer (Form KREF 001) with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance (KREF) and a copy of that form with the Crittenden County Clerk (or Kentucky Secretary of State for judicial races.) This step is required before you raise or spend money for your campaign. It is free to file and you may do it at any time, but must be completed online at kref.ky.gov by selecting the "eFiling" menu item on the lefthand side of the page. You must create a user account to do this. When completed, you will receive a candidate number. You will also need a federal tax ID number to open your campaign account.

If you are simply mulling a run, you may want to first research the requirements for the office you are seeking. You can find that by downloading the corresponding PDF linked to the list of offices at the left. That document includes the required nominating petition if the form of a fillable PDF.

You can also download KREF guides on becoming a candidate and declaring your spending intent. Those spending $3,000.00 or less will not be required to file election finance statements, while those who intend to spend more than $3,000.00 will have additional requirements.

Online training, including a series of 11 videos and a "Candidate Guide to Campaign Finance," are available from the Registry. In addition, find welcome packets to spending "More than $3,000" and "$3,000 or Less."
